Gunship Multispectral Sensor System PDF Print E-mail

Gunship Multispectral Sensor System (GMS2) is the electro-optical/infrared fire control system in development for the Air Force Special Operations Command AC-130U Gunship. This mature, high performance multisensor system is an adaptation of the AH-1Z Target Sight System (TSS) now in test and evaluation with the US Marine Corps.

The GMS2 consists of a large-aperture, midwave infrared (MWIR) sensor, two image-intensified television (I2TV) cameras, a near-infrared (NIR) laser pointer, and a laser designator/rangefinder (with eyesafe mode). These components are integrated into a highly stabilized turret to ensure outstanding image quality and high accuracy line-of-sight (LOS) pointing for target geo-location and gun fire control.

The GMS2 program recently completed a risk reduction flight demonstration to assess system performance in such areas as target imaging, LOS stabilization, image blending, image processing, and system controls. Customer feedback was extremely positive.

CAPABILITIES AND FEATURES:

• Third-generation large-aperture, four-FOV, MWIR sensor for long-range target detection, recognition, and identification

• I2TV sensors for situational awareness and the ability to detect light sources, personnel locators, markers, beacons, etc.

• Laser rangefinding (1.06 and 1.54 μm) and designation (1.06 μm) for targeting and delivery of laser-guided munitions

• NIR laser pointer (visible in I2TVs) for identifying and handing off targets

• Advanced image processing for optimum image quality, and XR algorithms for enhanced recognition and identification range performance

• Image blending for improved passive situational awareness during night operations

• Highly accurate LOS pointing capability for weapons delivery

• On-gimbal inertial measurement unit for accurate target geo-location

• Versatile, modular architecture—also available in a smaller turret—for multiple mission applications and future growth; configurable to meet mission needs

• Performance-based sustainment for guaranteed system availability and reduced life-cycle cost
