Australia to join US light vehicle program |

The Minister for Defence, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, today announced First Pass approval for Phase 4 of the LAND 121 project, that will seek to replace some of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) 4200 Land Rovers with a fleet of protected light mobility vehicles.
Opening the 10th Land Warfare Conference in Brisbane, Mr Fitzgibbon said the vehicles to be acquired under Phase 4 will perform a number of important combat support roles, including command, liaison and light battlefield resupply.
They will be provided to Army’s combat units and will be designed to operate successfully in future conflict environments.
During the next stage of the project, Australia intends to participate in the technology demonstration phase of the United States (US) Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) Program, which is expected to replace over 60,000 vehicles in the US Army and Marine Corps from 2012 onwards.

Barak declares Israeli military readier than in 2006 |

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says the Israeli military is better prepared for a conflict than it was before the summer 2006 war against Lebanon, Israel's Jerusalem Post newspaper reported on Tuesday. "It really inspires confidence and warms the heart to see the efforts made to implement lessons learned from the flaws of the war, under very difficult financial constraints," Barak said during a visit to a technology and logistics base at Tel Hashomer. He added that the way the army had equipped itself would "bolster its operational capabilities."
The defense minister said the improvements had been made with "real professionalism and impressive efficiency."

Congo rebels declare cease-fire to prevent panic |

Congolese rebels say they are instituting a unilateral cease-fire around the eastern provincial capital of Goma to prevent panic as the army retreats and residents flee.
The rebels made the announcement Wednesday in a statement as gunfire crackled throughout the city, apparently from the retreating troops who residents said are out of control.
A U.N. spokesman welcomed the announcement but said it was not yet clear if the "simple declaration" was being followed by action.
Spokesman Madnodje Mounoubai confirmed that Goma was generally in a state of panic but confirmed the rebels were not in the city. He said peacekeepers were at the airport and at in other strategic points.
Congolese soldiers in retreat commandeered vehicles and fired wildly as they moved through Goma.

Syria accuses U.S. in deadly helicopter attack |

The U.S. military said it is investigating claims from Syria that U.S. helicopters based in Iraq killed eight people and wounded another Sunday in an attack inside Syria's territory Sunday.yria's state news agency SANA said four U.S. helicopters crossed the border and struck a farm about 8 kilometers (5 miles) inside Syria before returning to Iraqi airspace.
The raid occurred about 4:45 p.m. (1345 GMT). The helicopters hit a civilian building under construction on the farm, killing killing three men, the wife of a guard and four children, SANA said.
Military officials are investigating the claims, Sgt. Brooke Murphy, a U.S. military spokeswoman, told CNN.

Bollinger awarded potential $1.5 billion FRC contract
Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. has beaten out five competitors to win an $88 million Coast Guard contract with a $1.5 billion potential. It covers the design and construction of a series of Fast Response Cutter (FRC)/Sentinel Class patrol boats.
The 153-foot cutter, which will be capable of speeds of over 28 knots, will be built at Bollinger's shipyard in Lockport, La.
The Sentinel Class will be 153 feet long, capable of speeds of 28 plus knots, and armed with one stabilized remotely-operated 25 mm chain gun and four crew-served .50-caliber machine guns. It will be able to operate independently for five days at sea and be underway for 2,500 hours per year.
The Sentinel will accommodate 22 crew members. A state-of-the-market command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) system will be fully interoperable with other Coast Guard assets as well as those of the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.
The first Sentinel will be delivered to Coast Guard District 7, based in Miami, in the fall of 2010.
