The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) unmanned aircraft system (UAS) will serve as an adjunct to the U.S. Navy's P-8A Poseidon and provide persistent maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capability.
Boeing Solution: The Boeing BAMS 550 UAS will provide the U.S. Navy a unique yet off-the-shelf capability to meet the persistent unmanned maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance requirements of Joint and Naval Commanders. The BAMS 550 offers the Navy an unmanned surveillance solution with unrivaled speed, reach and reliability. The BAMS 550 UAS marries the world class performance and reliability of the Gulfstream G550 (already in service with the Navy) with a fully integrated leading edge sensor suite, extensive communications capabilities, flight proven autonomous mission control system and a worldwide support infrastructure. The BAMS 550 leverages extensive U.S Navy investment in the P-8A Poseidon to help ensure the highest degree of commonality and interoperability between the two systems. Boeing Team: The BAMS 550 UAS industry team consists of Boeing, Gulfstream, Raytheon, Rolls-Royce and Honeywell.
Missions BAMS missions will include maritime surveillance, battle damage assessment, port surveillance, and communication relay; plus support maritime interdiction, surface warfare and targeting for maritime and strike missions.
Capabilities The BAMS UAS will provide the strike group commander with a reliable picture of surface threats while minimizing the need to put manned assets in harm's way. By disseminating timely information to the warfighter, the BAMS UAS will significantly enhance situational awareness for naval and joint forces.
The BAMS UAS will be fully integrated into the joint ISR architecture, providing information to joint forces in near real time. Long-endurance BAMS UAVs will be able to provide a continuous on-station presence at ranges of 1000-3000 nautical miles from the launch point.
The U.S. Navy's BAMS concept is critical to recapitalizing the maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance force as legacy platforms come to the end of their projected service lives. For more information, read the BAMS UAS (PDF) overview.
