The Avenger is an inexpensive, lightweight, shoot-on-the-move short-range air defense system designed for rapid firing. The system requires a minimum of training and has proven its capabilities through extensive field usage. Capabilities Fires quickly and accurately, operating in a stand-alone configuration or mounted on various other military vehicles Carries eight Stingers in two four-missile launch pods ready for rapid firing from a gyro-stabilized turret Acquires targets either by direct vision using the head-up display optical sight or by using a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system Versatility of Avenger system C-130 aircraft transports three systems and their crews, while a C-141B aircraft transports six CH-47 or CH-53 helicopter can airlift two complete units Delivery Schedule In early 1990, Avenger received Department of the Army approval for full-scale production More than 1,100 Avengers are fielded to the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and Army National Guard worldwide The first of several international sales was executed in 1996 During the test and evaluation phase, the Avenger met or exceeded all test requirements in both day and night testing.
